Dear Ecole Selkirk Elementary School Community,
We hope this message finds you well. On behalf of both the continuing and new members of your School Council, we are pleased to let you know who we are and share a bit about our role and how we aim to support the success of our school community.
The School Council is a collaborative group of parents and community members who work closely with school administrators. We are partners in school growth planning and policy development, give input on budgets, school programming, staffing needs, and renovations. We also listen to and speak up on concerns and ideas from families, staff, students, and community members. We support students, families, staff, and the community as we work together to help learners grow and thrive. Our goal is to be a positive and proactive voice that represents the diversity of our school community.
For the 2024/2025 year, your School Council includes:
· Interim-Chairperson: Tim Kucharuk
· Secretary/Treasurer: Jerry Zahora
· Members at large: Antonia Wilson, Brendan Preston, and Colleen Madore
In April, the School Council was disappointed to accept the resignation of our chair, John Coyne, for work-related reasons. We thank John for his service over the past three years and wish him well in his future endeavours. His resignation means there is one vacancy on School Council. If you're interested in making a difference in your school community, our next meeting is on August 26th, 2025, and we welcome all parents and community members to attend and find out more. The School Council hopes to make a decision and welcome a new member early in the 2025/2026 school year.
Whether you want to get involved as a member or not, we welcome your ideas, questions, and energy! Your input is invaluable in helping us build a stronger, more inclusive school environment.
If you have something you want to bring to council’s attention, we ask that you email the issue at least 48 hours before the meeting so it can be added to the agenda. Our email address is: [email protected].
Thank you for your continued support and involvement. We look forward to working together to make Selkirk a successful and inspiring school for all students.
Warm regards,
Ecole Selkirk Elementary School Council
We are still seeking a Yukon First Nation member. Please email if you are interest.

Hello, Ecole Selkirk Elementary School Community!
Welcome to the 2023 - 2024 School Year!
Your School Council is ready to hear and respond to any concerns you may have. Your five School Council members are a group of dedicated parents and community members who have the best interest of Selkirk in mind. We meet once a month, and all parents or staff are welcome to attend at any time. We have a number of projects on the go, such as helping with the development of a School Growth Plan and gathering more information about School Boards in the Yukon. In conjunction with our hard-working Principal, and Vice-Principal, we are planning a Welcome Back evening, where you can meet us in person, as well as visit your child's classroom and teacher. More details to come! Our Annual General Meeting is around the corner, so stay tuned for more information on that.
If you would like to contact us, you can come to a meeting
Thank you for being a part of the Selkirk school community, and we will see you soon.
Selkirk Elementary School Council
Chair John Coyne, Secretary Tina Busetto, Treasurer Janna Swales, Member Tim Kucharuk, Member Melanie Davignon
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Ecole Selkirk Elementary School Council has been working on behalf of students, parents, and the school at large throughout the 2022-2023 school year. This work started before the school year with the hiring of our new Principal Nicholas Vienneau! Nicholas has done a great job in his first year at Selkirk alongside Vice-Principal Leslie Doran and the rest of the administrative team!
Throughout the year, School Council heard many concerns from parents and the community ranging from the Alsek/Lewes intersection construction to maintenance issues along Selkirk Street, to the school infrastructure itself. School Council brought those issues to the Department of Education via email, letter, and in-person conversations.
We also facilitated discussions surrounding the First Nation School Board. A special sub-committee of School Council consisting of one council member and three parents continues to explore all options when it comes to joining a School Board.
School Council was extremely excited to fund several year-end requests to support school field trips ranging from sailing and circus arts to a trip to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve.
We were also very happy to receive a grant from the Every Student Every Day fund to cover the cost of swimming lessons.
The school is also updating our School Growth Plan. School Council has been a part of these discussions with teachers and administration.
While the school year is coming to an end, School Council will continue to follow up on the issues of concern from parents and the school community with the Department of Education and other levels of government.
It is an honour to serve on Ecole Selkirk School Council, and we hope everyone has a fantastic summer!
Chair Melanie Davignon, Secretary Tina Busetto, Treasurer John Coyne, Member Janna Swales, Member Tim Kucharuk.
School Council Letter to the School Community
January 25, 2023
Dear members of the Selkirk Elementary School Community,
After a lot of discussions and much thought, the École Selkirk Elementary School Council did NOT pass a resolution for a referendum to join the First Nation School Board (FNSB). The vote was not unanimous. This decision does not mean we are not in support of the good work that is being done by Yukon First Nation Education Directorate or that joining the FNSB is not the right choice for our school community. It is important for the school community to access information about the FNSB and evidence from schools that have joined on the impact on a child’s learning and development. There is an opportunity for everyone to become involved in the conversation and we would like to encourage its growth. As school council members, we are committed to: Facilitating opportunities for school community members to learn about what it means to join the FNSB; Learning more about the impact on the schools that have joined and look forward to the evidence of the first year; and Engaging the community in meaningful discussion and learning about what this opportunity has to offer. We would like to build on the momentum that was generated from the public meeting on January 24, and actively continue to support this conversation within our community while people are asking questions and seeking information. We are committed to helping organize events where this discussion and learning can take place. We welcome our school community to approach us to share their views. Please feel free to email school council at [email protected] or attend an upcoming meeting.
Thank you for your support as we have our children’s best interests in mind with every decision we make.
